Aaliyah W., a proud graduate of Pathways In Education Illinois, faced significant challenges on her journey to graduation. Her story is one of determination, resilience, and the power of support.

The instability of the past few years left Aaliyah feeling worn down and unsure of what her future would look like.

"When I started at Pathways, my family and I were homeless. At this point, I have already attended three high schools."

Walking into Pathways, she admitted,

"I was already broken and mad at the situation I was in and as a result of that, I was not willing to have an open heart."

Despite the difficulties, Aaliyah found a sense of belonging at Pathways.  She recalled,

"After a few months at Pathways, my teachers were welcoming and helped me to open up. I started to feel a calm spirit and feel the chains that I had around my heart breaking one chain at a time."

The supportive environment and guidance from her teachers helped her face the obstacles in her life and focus on her education. Early in her journey, Aaliyah received a difficult warning.

"I was told that I was not going to be able to graduate with my class of 2023. And that I wouldn’t be able to graduate at all if I didn’t begin to focus on school and get my priorities in order."

This was a turning point for her. She reflected,

"Y'all that was the hardest thing to hear. This made me think, “Would I even make it here?”

Hearing the truth from the PIE staff, combined with their belief in her, inspired her to stay focused. Instead of giving up, she became determined to graduate with her class.

Aaliyah worked hard every day, pushing through challenges and staying focused on her goals. She reflected,

"It was never easy, and sometimes I thought I would miss the finish line. But I finished with flying colors and am standing here today as a representative of my graduating class."

Her experience at Pathways taught her the importance of perseverance and self-belief. Throughout her journey, Aaliyah relied on the support of her family, teachers, and her own inner strength. She said,

"I have always been a fighter and a young lady of determination to make something of myself."

She credited Pathways and her family for guiding and pushing her toward her goals. Aaliyah’s determination and achievements have set the stage for her future. She proudly shared,

"I will be attending Illinois State University this fall and studying Business Administration."

She also offered advice to her peers, emphasizing the importance of resilience and learning from every experience. She shared a quote by Oprah that resonates with her journey:

"Learn from every mistake because every experience, encounter, and mainly your mistakes are there to teach you and force you into being more who you are. And then figure out what is the next right move. And the key to life is to develop an internal moral, emotional G.P.S. that can tell you which way to go."

Aaliyah Woods’ story is a testament to what students can achieve with determination, support, and a commitment to their education. Her journey at Pathways In Education shows that even in the face of hardship, success is possible.
