How Pathways In Education Helped Devin Graduate While Managing Mental Health and Type 1 Diabetes
At just 18 years old, Devin Sanchez stands proudly as a graduate of Pathways In Education Illinois—an achievement that represents far more than a diploma. For Devin, graduation is proof that perseverance, support, and self-belief can turn even the most difficult journey into a story of strength and hope.
“If a younger version of me were to see me here and alive about to take my next step into a different chapter, he would cry. Because he would’ve thought his story ended years ago.”
Devin’s life has been filled with challenges since childhood.
“For my entire life—and I mean every year—there was something wrong.”
Along with several traumatic experiences, Devin also faced ongoing struggles with his physical and mental health. His high school years began at Muchin College Prep, where the intense workload and strict environment quickly took a toll on him.
“My first week as a freshman ended with me having multiple panic attacks.”
After just two weeks, he wasn’t allowed to return to class due to concerns about his safety. During that difficult time, Devin’s psychologist recommended Pathways In Education, believing it would give him the flexibility and support he needed to heal while continuing his education.
In December 2019, Devin enrolled at Pathways and soon met his first teacher, Megan.
“With everything that was going on she was very supportive and understanding.”
As he continued, he found that every teacher at Pathways shared that same compassion.
“Joe, Meg, Celeste, Zoe, Patonna, Lucas, Brian, Erica, and my teacher now, Katie, have all been some of the most encouraging, reassuring, and sweetest teachers I have ever had.”
With Pathways’ flexible scheduling, Devin was able to balance medical appointments and his mental health care while staying on track toward graduation. The school also offered travel opportunities that gave him a sense of renewal.
“I went on many trips that the school offered, including a trip to Mexico where we got to meet the former president of Mexico and trips to Colorado and California where I was surrounded by nature. These trips felt like a reset from everything going on for me.”
Just as life began to improve, Devin was hospitalized and diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
“When I asked, ‘How could I have gotten this?’ a doctor told me it was ‘just bad luck.’ How is a person supposed to think that the world is not against them in a situation like this?”
It was a moment that could have broken him—but instead, it built him.
“It hurt a lot. But without suffering, I never would’ve been able to find peace.”
After his diagnosis, Devin focused on what he could control. Even after being hospitalized again this past December due to complications, he refused to give up.
“By that point I realized that I’d been through too much, worked too hard, and survived through too much pain to give up now.”
He credits his strength not only to his perseverance but also to the people who stood by him.
“My mother and father never gave up on me. They supported me going to Pathways to graduate, they stood by my bed every time I was sick, unstable, and in pain. My friends and family all listened to the music my life played even when I missed a key.”
Now, Devin is preparing to attend college, where he plans to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology and fine arts. His goal is to help others find the same peace he discovered through his struggles.
“Everyone deserves to find peace in their suffering. You are the first and last person you will ever be with, so love yourself enough to get better because you want to.”
Devin’s story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when a student receives the understanding, flexibility, and encouragement they need. At Pathways In Education, not only did he earn a diploma, he also found purpose, healing, and hope for the future.
