How PIE Grad, Aleria, Turned Life’s Obstacles into Motivation

Aleria delivers an inspiring speech to the Class of 2025 at Pathways In Education – Louisiana’s graduation ceremony.
“It feels so unreal to be standing here today as a part of the Class of 2025.”
For Aleria D., graduation was the culmination of perseverance, faith, and the support of her family and the Pathways community.
“If someone had told me a few years ago that I’d be here, I may not have believed them. Life threw many challenges my way, but with faith, and the love and encouragement of my family and the incredible educators at Pathways, I kept pushing forward and I’m here today.”
A Fresh Start at Pathways
When Aleria first came to Pathways, she was seeking a better opportunity for her education. A recent move had set her back academically, and she was also navigating the challenges of motherhood with her two-year-old son, Ken’Drevion. “Life was overwhelming, and for a while, I wanted to give up. But every time I felt like I couldn’t take another step forward, I thought of my momma, my dad, and my sweet baby boy. They became my reasons to keep going, and to stay strong no matter how tough it got. My family became a constant reminder that I have a bigger purpose than myself.”
Supportive Teachers and a Strong Community
Despite these challenges, Aleria found more than just academic guidance at Pathways—she found a family. “My time at Pathways was nothing short of amazing. I walked through the doors not knowing if I would rise above everything I was facing, but I quickly learned that Pathways was more than just a school, it was a family. It’s a place filled with people who care, uplift, and push students to see their worth and never settle for less than what they are capable of doing.”
Aleria credited specific educators who helped her thrive:
“I can’t speak about my journey without expressing my gratitude to some truly incredible people, people whose encouragement and belief in me changed my life. First, Ms. Cindy, my amazing teacher, you’re not just a teacher to me, you are a friend, a guide, and a shoulder to lean on. Your sweet, understanding heart means so much to me and I will always carry your kindness with me wherever I go.
And to Ms. Ariel, my counselor, you are the definition of caring, always willing to listen and provide support. Also to Ms. Loran, with her big heart and loving personality you will always and forever have a special place in my heart. Lastly, Ms. Debbie, my principal. You’ve been a constant source of support and strength. Thank you for your dedication, not just to me, but to all of us.”
Looking Ahead: Dreams and Determination
Aleria is now focused on her future with confidence and excitement. “My dreams are brighter because of everything I’ve experienced. I plan to go to college and pursue my passion for nursing, following in the footsteps of my amazing Aunt Shell. I also plan to pursue another talent of mine, which is doing hair, and has been something I’ve always loved to do. I am now prepared and determined to take those steps toward my future, not only for myself, but for my family, and most importantly, my son who is my biggest motivation in life.”
A Message of Perseverance
Reflecting on her journey, Aleria shared a powerful lesson for others facing challenges: “This moment is not an ending, it’s just the beginning. A sign that no matter how hard life gets, or any obstacles thrown my way, that I have the strength to move forward.”
Aleria concluded with inspiration for her peers: “This is my story and I hope it reminds you that even when life feels impossible, you can still rise up, keep going, and accomplish your dreams. It is not about being perfect, it is about pushing yourself forward, one step at a time, with a heart full of determination.”
Why Pathways Works
Aleria’s story highlights why Pathways is more than a school—it’s a community that empowers students, helps them overcome life challenges, and encourages them to reach their full potential academically, personally, and emotionally.
